“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” Helen Keller
School in a Suitcase is a blog about adventures in traveling with children and homeschooling. More importantly, it is about nurturing connectedness, empathy, curiosity, and creativity.
My name is Odette and I am the mother of two beautiful children, Vivianne, age 5, and Théodore, age 7. I am married to Dan, who is Papa to Vivi and Théo. We are currently homeschooling and traveling the world! Our itinerary for the next three months includes Los Angeles, San Diego, Hongkong, Singapore, Bali, and Lombok.
Please join my Canadian crew as we adventure and engage in real-life learning. Help us to become more peaceful, connected, and humanitarian, and to become more focused on relationships than on stuff and accomplishments.
May our experiences be as enriching and inspiring for you as they are for us!
I will miss you guys, but enjoy hearing about your travels. I have tears in my eyes, but they are tears of joy. Good luck and safe travels to you all!

Hi Larysa! Thanks for the good wishes. We’ll miss you guys too – hopefully we can get together when we get back!
Wow, things have progressed since we were out for drinks a few months ago and you were casually thinking of travelling! What a great idea…can’t wait to follow your travels. May God bless you (and all the details) as you set sail.
Hi Shawna! Yes, where has the time gone? Thanks for the good wishes, and I’ll be hoping to catch up with you soon! I sure hope that you are feeling well; blessings to you as well.
Wow, what an adventure! We look forward to hearing all about it. Also, Vivi is VERY talented with the violin. Keep us posted and you will be in our thoughts.
Hi Jeanette! Yes, this will be an adventure! It started yesterday with our arrival in sunny L.A. (forecast 23 degrees celcius all week) and is continuing this morning with a 5-hour wait for Disneyland to open (we all woke up at 5 am, with very excited kids!). We’ll catch up with you guys soon, I hope!
Hi Odette,
I had no idea you were planning this but what fun! You’ll have to find out how this compares to your own childhood travels…All my love
Hi Robin! You’re not the only one who wasn’t aware of our plans – that’s because they were rather last minute! It was a combination of Dan and I having a whack of air miles and no regular jobs (Dan’s slow time with his company, and me doing locums), ongoing concerns regarding the kids’ schooling, and a few other varied reasons. It just seemed like a good time to go somewhere, in the middle of a Calgary winter of course! I’m still keeping you in mind for a “big 4 o” trip. By the way, don’t you have a birthday coming up? I’ll be thinking about you on the 14th!
